Measurement of ketone bodies in the blood<\/h2>\n

The WellionVet BELUA ketone and glucose meter enables the easy measurement of ketone bodies in the blood e.g. during the use of oral antidiabetics (SENVELGO\u00ae<\/sup>) for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in cats.<\/p>\n

The SGLT-2 inhibitor Velagliflozin is used in veterinary medicine to reduce hyperglycemia in cats. Various risk factors must be considered to achieve a reliable reduction in blood glucose levels while still ensuring patient safety.<\/p>\n

1. Exclude diabetic ketoacidosis\"\"<\/a><\/h4>\n

Ketone measurement with the WellionVet BELUA enables careful patient selection<\/strong>
\nBefore treatment a present diabetic ketoacidosis should be excluded. (\u22652,4 mmol\/l, Weingart et al.).<\/p>\n

2. Home monitoring ensures a safe treatment start\"\"<\/a><\/h4>\n

The biological effect mechanism of SGLT-2 inhibitors triggers glucosuria. However, the degree of glucosuria does not provide a reliable diagnostic indicator for monitoring glycemic control.
\nFurthermore, SGLT-2 inhibitors prevent hyperglycemia in the event of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (= euglycemic ketoacidosis; eDKA). Thus, despite normal blood glucose levels, eDKA may be present and can only be diagnosed by measuring ketone bodies. Therefore, monitoring the glucose concentration and ketone values in the first two weeks of therapy is essential for assessing treatment success. If ketone body levels are elevated, treatment with velagliflozin should be stopped immediately.
\nWellionVet BELUA enables constant monitoring of ketone levels from the start of therapy to avoid eDKA from the start of treatment.<\/strong>
\nA test for ketone bodies is required at the beginning of the therapy during the first two weeks every 1 to 3 days, as well as whenever the cat shows symptoms such as reduced food intake, acute vomiting, or decreased activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n
