What should I bear in mind when measuring glucose in my pet?

Useful information in the management of diabetes at animals

What’s my task?

  • Use exclusively blood glucose meters which are specially developed and calibrated for animals – e.g. WellionVet BELUA or WellionVet GLUCO CALEA – Blood glucose meters for humans are not suitable for animals!
  • Test the blood glucose of your pet regularly according to the advice of your veterinarian.
  • Note the blood glucose results, the amount of food, the dose of insulin and the testing time
  • Inform your veterinarian if the test result is outside the range given by the veterinarian.
  • If the tested blood glucose is below 70mg/dl (3,9 mmol/l), test again to detect an upcoming hypoglycemia. You can treat hypoglycemia quickly by oral administration of Invertsugar Syrup (e.g. Wellion 1SHOT or Wellion GOLD with vanilla flavour)
  • Feed only the amounts of food recommended by the veterinarian.
  • Inform your veterinarian when you are aware of a change in the behaviour of your pet.
  • Only inject insulin that has been stored properly and only change the amount of insulin after consulting your vet. Remember to protect your pets’ insulin especially in summer from the heat in time. (e.g. Wellion FRIGO cooler bag is a solution)

What to avoid?

  • Do not use blood glucose meters which are calibrated for humans.
  • Do not reduce or increase the amount of food without consulting your veterinarian first.
  • Do not inject insulin which was not stored appropriately.
  • Do not change the dose of insulin without consulting your veterinarian first.
  • If your pet does not eat or vomits contact your veterinarian immediately.
